Kelly Bires Powers Win-Tron Racing To Strong Top-10 At Talladega

TALLADEGA, Alabama (April 28, 2009) - - It was three years since Kelly Bires tackled an ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Talladega Superspeedway but the Mauston, Wisconsin native looked like he never missed a beat as he propelled the Win-Tron Racing entry to a strong ninth place finish behind the wheel of the No. 32 Wolfpack Rentals TOYOTA Camry in the ARCA RE/MAX 250.

In two previous ARCA RE/MAX Series starts through his impressive stock car career, Bires had never finished outside the top-10. His goal heading into his second ARCA race at Talladega he was looking to keep that stat alive in the fourth race of the season.

Practice went smoothly, second fastest for the Lakeville, Minnesota-based Win-Tron Racing team. Utilizing the same piece that James Buescher captured his first career superspeedway victory in February at Daytona International Speedway, the team knew they had a car capable of winning; they just need everything else to go their way.

Looking to start near the front, Bires in qualifying hauled his TOYOTA Camry on the line and tackled the 2.66-mile speedway to a time of 51.356 seconds transferring to a speed of 186.463 miles per hour positioning the team third on the starting grid. The run was a career-best time trials effort for the NASCAR driver and a season-best thus far for the team.

The veteran ARCA RE/MAX Series entered the race with high hopes and it wasn’t long before those high hopes turned into cheers as Bires quickly accelerated his car to the top spot on lap 11 where he led the field for an impressive 35 laps.

Battling with one of the most competitive ARCA fields in recent Talladega history, Bires had to deal with the lingering challenge of other competitors trying to slice and dice their way into the lead with Bires having to fight for every position.

A pit stop approaching lap 45 allowed a  prime opportunity for the team to enter pit road while leading for hopefully the lone pit stop of the 94-lap event. A quick change of tires and several gallons of Sunoco racing fuel, Bires found himself back in contention for the lead of the ARCA RE/MAX 250.

Flirting solidly in the top-five, Bires found himself in prime position to win his first career ARCA RE/MAX Series victory but his strong performance would be shafted as in the closing laps of the event, Bires would be “hung out to dry” which saw the No. 32 entry slid back through the running order.

With the yellow flags flying late in the event there was little chance for Bires to recover back into top-five status. He did however solider on to a solid and hard-fought ninth place finish, awarding the Win-Tron Racing team their third top-10 finish of the 2009 season.

The team’s worst effort was 11th at Salem Speedway earlier this month.

“Kelly did a fantastic job for Win-Tron Racing, the cards just didn’t fall our way at the end,” said Win-Tron Racing co-owner and team manager Nate Thiesse. “We showed everyone that we had a strong car we just need to have some more friends there at the end. The performance really helps our car owner standings which is the championship we are trying to take in 2009.”

Next up for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is the first of two trips to Kentucky Speedway for the running of the Drive Smart! Buckle-Up Kentucky 150. The event, the fifth installment on the 2009 schedule is set for Saturday, May 9 at 8:00 p.m. Eastern. Daytona winner James Buescher is scheduled to return to the seat for the second time this season.
