Win-Tron Racing; Matt Merrell Ready To Tame The Rock

“Team Looks For Top-Five Finish In Final Race Of 2008”

ROCKINGHAM, North Carolina (October 30, 2008) - - After losing a potential second straight top-10 finish in the most recent USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup Series event at Southern National Raceway Park, rookie Matt Merrell and his Win-Tron Racing team head to the legendary Rockingham Speedway looking to recover and end their inaugural season with a top-five finish in Saturday’s Mark Brooks Memorial Black’’s Tire American 200 presented by Food King.

Looking back at Kenly, Merrell had high hopes of securing his second straight top-10 effort after finishing 10th at Iowa in September. The weekend started off stout by posting the fourth quickest time. With qualifying rained out, Merrell would be forced to start the event 16th. Immediately, Merrell found himself with a strong car and quickly positioned his Merrell Lease Chevrolet into the top-five. The team pitted with the leaders approaching lap 40 for four tires. While maneuvering back into the top-10, Merrell day would take a turn when another competitor turned the No. 32 machine causing substantial damage. The team’s top-10 run would be spoiled and instead resulted in a disappointing 22nd place finish.

“Kenly was frustrating because I thought we had another top-10 in the books,” Merrell recalled. “I’m really proud of my guys though. They were awesome all weekend. They gave me a great car and that’s all I can ask for. We didn’t deserve the finish but we’re going to Rockingham this weekend and look to end our season on a high note.”

Invading the legendary Rockingham Speedway presents challenges for the USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup tour, but Merrell and Company are coming armed and ready to conquer the track nicknamed “The Rock.”
“Rockingham Speedway is a place with a lot of rich history,” said Merrell. “When we were there for the open test, you can realize why it has a presence and why it was important to bring the track back to life. It’s a neat place.”

With a solid outing in the open test at Rockingham earlier this month, Merrell is hoping that when his team unloads for practice this weekend, they’ll be near the top.

“The test went pretty good. We’re going back after making some changes and we’re pretty confident when we unload, we’ll show that the changes really paid off. It’s the last of the year and the guys deserve to go out on top. I can’t thank them enough for everything they’ve done for me this year. They are awesome. We’ve had our ups and downs this year but we’ve been able to persevere and keep racing. We’re capable of winning on Saturday and it would mean the world to me to hoist that Rockingham trophy with my team.”

Win-Tron Racing Nate Thiesse is looking forward to wrapping up the 2008 USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup season on a positive note. “It’s been a learning year, that’s for sure. We’ve certainly have experienced the good and the bad this year but that’s part of it. Matt has done a great job for us this year and we’re looking forward to invading Rockingham and getting ourselves a finish we can be happy to close the season with.”

With just one race remaining in the USAR Hooter’s Pro Cup Series championship series, Merrell is holding the 18th position at 405 markers, gaining 83 points after Kenly. Merrell is 41 markers from the top-10 and 267 credits from the top spot held by Benny Gordon. Just 85 points separate 18th from fourth in the championship rundown. Additionally, 64 credits keep Merrell from becoming the top rookie in the developmental series heading into Rockingham, North Carolina this weekend.

Merrell Lease Service and Win-Tron Driver Development will hold the sponsorship roles on the No. 32 Chevrolet Monte Carlo entry this week.

Earlier this year, Win-Tron Racing competed in the Carolina 500K ARCA RE/MAX Series event at Rockingham Speedway.

The Mark Brooks Memorial Black’’s Tire American 200 presented by Food King (200 laps/200 miles) is set for Saturday, November 1, 2008. Practice begins Friday, October 31st with a two hour session scheduled from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. Awesome Awnings Pole Qualifying is slated to begin at approximately 4:00 p.m.  A Wraps INK on-track autograph session has been penciled in for 11:30 a.m. on race day.
