James Buescher Powers To Ninth At DuQuoin
DUQUOIN, Illinois (September 3 2008) - - James Buescher can now make it two-for-two. The Plano, Texas native finished ninth in Mondays Southern Illinois 100 giving the rising star his second consecutive top-10 finish on the dirt in the No. 32 Mercedes Homes-Red Line Oil Dodge Charger for Win-Tron Racing.
Last year, Buescher driving for the Minnesota-based team made his dirt track debut at the Illinois State Fairgrounds. The avid racecar driver shined through obstacles during the 100-lap event to finish seventh.
Now, just a little over a year later, Buescher was not only looking to make some noise but add his first top-10 finish of the 2008 ARCA RE/MAX Series season to his resume.
In practice Monday morning, Buescher battled a tight-race car but was still able to pounce out the 15th fastest lap after mounting a time of 35.091 seconds at 102.590 MPH. The track conditions are a little different from Springfield last year, sounded Buescher, who most recently competed in the ARCA RE/MAX Series at Nashville Superspeedway last month. Its a hot one out there today. Were going to get together as a group and see what we can do to make our Mercedes Homes a little better.
Looking for a strong starting position was of the importance for the Win-Tron Racing team and they knew with Buescher at the helm, a solid starting spot they would receive. Turning a lap of 33.832 seconds or 106.408 MPH, Buescher had nailed down a lap that was over a second quicker than his best practice lap just a hour earlier.
The track picked up grip fast which allowed everyone to find speedway in qualifying, added Buescher, who qualified his No. 32 machine 12th. Im pretty content with the way our car is handling; well just give it our all during the race.
At the start of the Southern Illinois 100, Buescher found himself comfortably inside the top-15. Not immediately a threat for the top-10, Buescher was riding with the intent to save his tires on the teams entry. The strategy paid for the Win-Tron Racing team as conservation allowed the No. 32 to stay on the track when the rest of the field came to pit road on lap 25.
Taking control of the field was nothing new for Buescher in the ARCA RE/MAX Series, but Mondays Labor Day tradition marked the first time that the NASCAR Nationwide Series rookie took command on a dirt track. Buescher held the point for five circuits before giving way to eventual winner Frank Kimmel on lap 31.
With wearing tires, Buescher began to slide back through the field but not as drastically as some would think. The talented driver gave a gallant fight to stay in the top-10 but would give up his stellar run to duck into pit road just after halfway.
Now riding safely in the top-20, Buescher had nearly 45 circuits to move his Dodge emblem back through the field and record his first top-10 finish of the season.
During the later stages of the event, Buescher reported a severe tight condition on his machine with crew chief Mike Chaffee opting to bring his driver down pit road inside 25 laps remaining for some fresh rubber and an adjustment.
The stop paid off.
Over the next 25 laps, Buescher would cautiously but aggressively move through the field. A late caution offered an opportunity for Buescher to make a charge into the top-10. On the final restart, Buescher out-wrestled the No. 09 of John Wes Townley and the No. 11 of Bryan Silas to move up to ninth where Buescher would cross the start-finish line.
The performance also awarded Win-Tron Racing with their fourth top-10 finish of the season and their first since Pocono Raceway in June.
Not a bad day, said Buescher after the race. We just couldnt get the tightness out of our racecar and they plagued our finish. We rebounded and got back into the top-10 after a late race pit stop which proved to be the right move. Im glad to be back in the top-10 and well take this finish and see we can improve on it Saturday in Chicagoland.
Nate Thiesse of Win-Tron Racing commented, Were happy with the finish. James did a great job battling a tight racecar. It got better, but just not enough where we could make a charge back into the top-five. We learned a lot together on the dirt and well take this finish and move on to Chicagoland and look for bigger and better things. As always, its a real pleasure to have James behind the wheel. He always comes through.
Buescher was one of just three leaders who took control of Mondays event. Buescher led the second highest number of laps between Kimmel and pole-sitter Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. Mondays event marked the second time in 2008 where Buescher controlled the ARCA RE/MAX Series field. With his five laps led at DuQuoin, Buescher put his season total to 58 after leading 53 circuits earlier this year at Cayuga Motor Speedway.
Mercedes Homes and Win-Tron Racing Driver Development served as the sponsors for Mondays Labor Day tradition.
Next up for the ARCA RE/MAX Series is their annual trip to the Chicagoland Speedway. The Chicagoland ARCA 200 is set for Saturday, September 6th with the green flag scheduled to waive shortly after 5:00 p.m. local time. The event will be taped delayed on SPEED with the 17th event of the season set to air on Sunday, September 7th at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. Last year, Win-Tron Racing nabbed a top-20 finish with 2005 ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie-of-the-Year Joey Miller at the controls. |
